What J217 is

J217 publishes listings of activities submitted by churches and faith-based organizations. That is the whole service. J217 does not organize, plan, host, staff, supervise, fund, or run any activity listed here, and is not a party to anything that happens at one.

The hosting organization is responsible for its own activity

Every listing names the organization hosting it. That organization is solely responsible for the activity: for its safety, its supervision, its staffing, its insurance, its compliance with the law, and for the accuracy of what it submitted. If you have a question about an activity, ask them, not me.

A listing is not an endorsement

Hosting organizations affirm a statement of belief when they submit, and that affirmation is the only thing J217 checks. It is taken at their word and not independently investigated. Beyond it, J217 does not screen or vouch for any organization, its leadership, its practices, or the people who show up to its activities. Nothing here is a background check, a safety inspection, or an insurance verification, and a listing is not a guarantee about anyone.

You take part at your own risk

Activities listed here can involve physical work, tools, ladders, vehicles, food handling, contact with the public, and other real risks of injury, illness, loss, or property damage. You decide whether to attend, and you accept those risks yourself. Use the same judgment you would use for any invitation from a stranger, satisfy yourself that an activity is safe and suitable before going, and do not rely on this site to have done that for you.

Children

J217 does not screen, background check, interview, or verify anyone. Because of that, listings that recruit members of the public into one-to-one or unsupervised contact with a minor are not accepted, including mentoring, tutoring, coaching, babysitting, and transporting a young person. Organizations confirm when they submit that any activity involving people under 18 is run and supervised by their own screened people, and that no volunteer who found them through J217 will be left alone with a child. That confirmation is the organization's own affirmation. J217 cannot verify it, and it is not a substitute for a parent's judgement.

If a young person attends an activity, the parent or guardian is responsible for deciding whether it is appropriate and for arranging supervision with the hosting organization directly. J217 arranges nothing and supervises no one.

Service, not campaigns

J217 lists work, not advocacy. Activities held to support or oppose a candidate, a political party, a ballot measure, or a piece of legislation are not accepted, and neither are rallies, marches, and demonstrations organized around those ends. Whether an activity is political is judged by what it is for, not by who it serves.

Serving people is not politics. Feeding, housing, clothing, visiting, building, tutoring adults, and giving are welcome regardless of which cause anyone thinks they resemble, and regardless of who the people being served are.

This is not a claim that Christians should stay out of public life. It is that the mission does not belong to any party, and a board shared by churches across the Triangle stops being usable to all of them the day it reads as belonging to a side. The statement of belief governs who may post here. This governs what kind of activity may be listed. They are different questions.

Waivers and releases

Some hosting organizations ask people to sign a waiver, release, or permission form before taking part. Where a listing links to one, that document belongs to the hosting organization. J217 does not write it, host it, keep a copy of it, review it, or take any view on whether it is valid, current, or enforceable. Following the link takes you to that organization's own site.

Any agreement you sign is between you and the hosting organization. J217 is not a party to it, gains nothing under it, and cannot enforce it or waive it on anyone's behalf. Nothing in such a document changes these terms in either direction: it does not extend J217 any protection, and it does not create any obligation for J217 that these terms do not already state.

A listing without a waiver link does not mean no waiver is required. Ask the hosting organization what they need before you go.

What the review does, and what it cannot do

Every submission is read by a person before it goes live. Listings that are incomplete, unclear, or out of place get questioned or turned down, and that check is taken seriously. But it is a check on the listing, not on the activity. Reading a description cannot confirm that the details are true, that the activity will happen, that it will run the way it was written, or that the organization behind it is what it says it is.

Details come from whoever submitted them. Dates move, activities get cancelled, addresses change, and mistakes get typed. So J217 makes no promise that any listing is accurate, current, or complete, and you should confirm with the hosting organization before you travel.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent the law allows, J217 and anyone operating it are not liable for any injury, death, illness, loss, theft, property damage, or other harm arising out of an activity listed on this site, out of your dealings with any organization or person you find through it, or out of any error, omission, interruption, or unavailability of the site itself. The site and everything on it are provided as they are, with no warranties of any kind.

If you post a listing

By submitting an activity you confirm that you are authorized to post on behalf of the organization named, that the details are accurate, that the organization is responsible for the activity, and that you will tell me if it is cancelled or changed. You agree to cover J217 for any claim arising from your listing or your activity.

Reporting or removing a listing

If something on the board looks wrong, out of date, or not right, tell me at chris@j217.org and I will look into it. J217 can decline, edit, or remove any listing, at any time, for any reason, with no obligation to explain. To take down your own listing, email from the address you submitted with.

The prayer board

Anyone may ask for prayer. A person reads every request before it appears, and not everything is published. Requests naming someone in full alongside a private situation are declined, as is anything aimed at a person rather than for them.

What you post there is public. Write it the way you would want it read by a stranger, because that is who will read it. Do not post another person's private circumstances in a way that identifies them, and do not post anything you are not free to share.

J217 does not provide counselling, medical advice, crisis support, or any other professional service, and reading the board is not a substitute for one. If you are in crisis, please contact the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, or emergency services if someone is in immediate danger. Requests are read by one person and can wait hours before anyone sees them.

Ask and your request comes down, by emailing from the address you gave. Requests can also be removed without notice at my discretion.

Changes

These terms can change. The date at the top changes with them, and continuing to use the site means accepting the current version.
